Does someone know the name of this children's book?

It was about two girls who wanted to become popular when they started junior high. I think one of them was named Lydia and one of them had two gay dads. The book was set up to look like it was the girls doenting what popular girls do. At some point in time they tried to learn how to knit. I think the blonde one tried to dye her hair with bleach. Also at one point in time one of them tried out for a part in some kind of play and she sang on my own. The book was hand-lettered and had many pictures in it. If anyone remembers the name and the author that would be super helpful.
