What should you do when you don't hear from the interviewer after a promising interview?

I had the interview on Friday and the interviewer said he'd contact me within the course of this week. He told me I did very well and I was hoping to have heard from him by now. What should I do? Will giving him a call or writing an email reek of desperation or should I wait a little longer? I really need this job. Thanks.
