What are the advantages and disadvantages of wood-based manufactured boards compared to solid timber?

They are cheaper and flaw-free. They are easier to work and the glue in them kills off woodworm. The downside is in their appearance, really. They are bland and lifeless without that new wood smell though chip-board can be had with a "real wood" laminate.
