Why did Christo leave Bulgaria?

I am doing a school report on the artists Christo and Jeanne-Claude. I read that Christo stowed away on a train to Austria and lost his citizenship in Bulgaria because of it. I think it has something to do with the communism there but I'm not sure. Did the government put limits on his artwork?
