Why was jesus crucified?

i was told god had jesus crucified because he cared about us and wanted to show us he loved us, that doesn't answer the question for me, i mean, my father wouldn't drag me outside, beat and torture me, then crucify me to show my siblings he cared for them, i mean c'mon, don't you think it sounds pretty barbaric?
